Iittala Birds By Toikka Mari
Iittala Birds By Toikka Glass Mari 2016
The addition of Mari to Oiva Toikka's flock of glass birds in 2016 reflects the artist's experimentation with new techniqes at Iittala's Finnish glassworks and the results both in colour and shape are most impressive. The pale yellow body with contrasting blue beak is subtle in shade and transparency and the pared-down dome shaped body hollow with an open base.
Born from a happy marriage between highly skilled craftsmen at the Iittala glassworks in Finland and the creative vision of artist and designer Oiva Toikka, the Toikka birds first came to life in 1972 and have since become admired and collected by glass lovers the world over. Over the course of four decades, the prolific Toikka has designed upwards of 500 glass birds which have been hand crafted by Iittala. With a streamlined interpretation of the shape and movement of the birds, the artist collaborates closely with traditional glass makers to add bold colour and vital form to the pieces and somehow to capture the nature and character of the creatures with striking, captivating results. Every one of Toikka’s sleek glass birds is unique, and is not just an individual work of art, but is also a highly prized outcome of the respected Finnish glass blowing tradition.
